Last month, our small but mighty team finally swapped computer screens for wellies and spades – venturing out of the office and into the woods to fulfil a long-held ambition: volunteering with Ulster Wildlife.

The anticipation was palpable as we prepared for a day of fresh air, teamwork, and the chance to make a tangible difference.

Achieving more through collaboration

With just three of us, we opted to join forces with a client whose team is also compact. Together, we rolled up our sleeves and transformed the edge of Balloo Woodland in Bangor – one of 19 nature reserves cared for by Ulster Wildlife. The spirit of collaboration was infectious – it was genuinely inspiring to see how much can be achieved when like-minded folk come together.

As passionate nature lovers, lending a hand to a conservation charity was always top of our list. It helped that Gillian, our founder, sits on the Board of Ulster Wildlife – and that FieldDay, our client, is the proud sponsor of the Let Nature In campaign. With all these connections, it felt as though the stars were well and truly aligned on our choice.

Learning about each other

The day was about more than just hard graft – we learned things about each other in the woods that we never would in the office. Sally revealed a hidden talent as a champion turf-cutter with a fiercely competitive edge; Nicole turned out to be a dab hand at rescuing frogs, and Gillian’s obsession with otters reached new heights – she nearly fainted with excitement when Ryan from Ulster Wildlife shared that otters had been caught on camera in the pond!

And the weather? It really couldn’t have been better – blue skies, warm sun and perfect picnic conditions for our well-deserved lunch break.

Our first, but definitely not our last team volunteering venture! The experience gave us a fresh perspective and strengthened bonds in ways we’d never anticipated.
