Build Better: How to Engage your Supply Chain on Sustainable Construction

Sustainability in construction is no longer just about energy-efficient buildings – it is increasingly about the supply chains behind them, yet this is where many companies hit a brick wall (pardon the pun) when it comes to engagement.

The built environment is responsible for around 40% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the most impactful sectors in the transition to net zero. Crucially, a large proportion of this impact sits outside direct operations and supply chain (Scope 3) emissions often account for up to 95% of a construction company’s carbon footprint, driven by materials, transport and subcontractor activity.

In the UK alone, the built environment contributes around 25% of national emissions, rising significantly when related activities are included. As regulations tighten and clients demand clearer carbon accountability, attention is rapidly shifting upstream – towards procurement and supplier engagement.

Across the industry, sustainable procurement is now a key business priority. Construction firms face increasing pressure to understand and report supply chain impacts, especially embodied carbon.

At the same time, there is growing recognition that supply chain sustainability delivers real value. Projects that embed low-carbon materials, efficient logistics and collaborative supplier relationships are achieving measurable gains – from reduced emissions and waste to improved efficiency and stronger tender performance.

Yet many organisations struggle to turn ambition into action due to complex, fragmented supply chains and limited data, time or expertise.

  • Strengthen alignment between contractors and their suppliers/sub-contractors

This focus on collaboration is critical in construction, where early engagement with suppliers – particularly around materials such as concrete and steel – can significantly reduce carbon impacts without increasing cost.

By taking a structured approach to supply chain sustainability, construction organisations can unlock a range of benefits:

Construction supply chains can be complex – but they present a significant opportunity. Much of a building’s carbon footprint is effectively “designed in” through early decisions about materials, sourcing and logistics, long before construction begins.

That means meaningful change depends on collaboration – not just within organisations, but across entire supplier networks. It also means a focus on sustainable procurement approaches is business-critical.
