You’ve probably heard the term “circularity” popping up in business chat, but what does it really mean for your company, and how can you put it into practice? Simply put, circularity is about moving away from the old “take-make-dispose” approach to a “use-and-reuse” mindset.

Think about it:

  • Linear Economy: We take raw materials, make products, use them, and then throw them away. This creates a lot of waste and relies on constantly extracting new resources.
  • Circular Economy: Instead of discarding, we design products, processes, and business models to keep resources in use for as long as possible. This means things are designed to be durable, reusable, repairable, and ultimately recyclable. Waste becomes a valuable resource for something new!

Why does this matter for your business?

It’s not just about being “green” – it’s smart business! Embracing circular thinking can help you:

  1. Reduce Costs: By reusing materials, repairing products, or optimising resource use, you can significantly cut down on raw material costs and waste disposal fees.
  1. Boost Innovation: Circular thinking challenges you to find new, creative ways to design, produce, and deliver value, leading to new products, services, and revenue streams.
  1. Enhance Reputation: Customers, investors, and employees are increasingly looking for businesses committed to sustainability. Circularity shows you’re a forward-thinking, responsible leader.
  1. Increase Resilience: Relying less on finite raw materials and volatile global supply chains can make your business more robust against scarcity and price fluctuations.

Circularity in Action: Simple Steps for Your Daily Operations

Now that we understand the ‘why,’ let’s look at how to weave circular principles into the fabric of your business’s everyday operations. It might sound like a big undertaking, but circular thinking can start with small, practical changes that add up to significant impact.

Here are ways to apply circular principles in your day-to-day:

  • Reduce & Rethink What You Buy: Before purchasing, ask if a new item is truly necessary. Can something be borrowed, repaired, or shared? Prioritise durable, repairable items and those made from recycled content. Think about the ‘whole-life’ cost of a product, not just the purchase price. Buying in bulk or using refills also cuts down on packaging waste.
  • Optimise How You Use: Regularly maintain and repair machinery, vehicles, and equipment to extend their lifespan, rather than discarding items for minor faults. Create systems for sharing resources (like tools) between teams or even with other businesses.
  • Optimise Your Energy and Water Efficiency: To truly optimise energy and water use and unlock significant savings, it’s essential to first measure your consumption accurately, going beyond utility bills by using sub-meters for key areas and taking frequent readings to establish patterns. Next, monitor this data consistently, tracking trends with spreadsheets or software and benchmarking against industry standards. This deep understanding allows you to pinpoint waste hotspots, identify hidden leaks, and uncover inefficiencies by correlating usage with operations and behaviour, facilitating highly targeted actions for a reduced environmental footprint.
  • Manage Waste as a Resource: Implement robust recycling programs for all waste streams (paper, plastics, metals, glass, food waste). Explore composting for organic waste. Critically, look for opportunities where your manufacturing scraps or by-products can be used as a resource by another business, turning waste into value. Actively work towards sending as little as possible to landfill. Attend one of Invest NI’s Resource Matching Workshops if you haven’t already.

By adopting these principles, you’re not just reducing your environmental footprint; you’re also uncovering opportunities for cost savings, greater efficiency, and a more resilient business model. Circularity isn’t just for product designers – it’s a powerful framework for everyone, every day, helping your business to thrive in a changing world.
